Foreign Book Covers

Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence was published in various hardcover and paperback editions and was translated into six other languages: Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portueguese, and Spanish. It was published in eleven countries: Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, and the United States.

As the authors had no say in foreign rights to the book, the new covers and translated titles were sometimes satisfying and sometimes shocking.

The British and Irish edition, for example, swapped our title and subtitle and added the words "on Convent Sexuality"!

Italian coverThe Italian title dropped the word "lesbian" completely. The cover, trimmed in vivid red, featured a buxom, nubile nun lilfting her wimple to reveal her breasts. The Italian publisher must have been marketing this book primarily to men.

One of my favorite covers retained the jaunty nun on our original Naiad edition but the title announced in German, "The Disobedient Brides of Christ"!

My favorite foreign cover featured the beautiful photo of Sister Pat O'Donnell, one of the contributors who was still in the convent. The sensitive French title comes closer to the spirit of the book's 50 stories: "My Sister, My Love."
