Co-sponsored by the Tretter Collection and Quatrefoil Library, the book launch of the new Spinsters Ink Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence featured co-editor Nancy Manahan and Doris Burkemper, the partner of co-editor Rosemary Keefe Curb, who died in May 2012.
Almost 50 people attended the reading and reception at Anderson Library on the U of M West Bank Campus. In 30 minutes, the U of M bookstore sold its entire stock (24 copies).
Nancy is pictured below holding an unusual copy of Lesbian Nuns. It looks like the first edition, but inside, all the pages are blank. This "dummy copy" appeared when Nancy and Rosemary appeared on the Sally Jessey Rafael Show, which taped before the actual book was printed. It is now archived in the U of M Tretter Collection.
Other photos show Lisa Vecoli, curator of the Tretter Collection; Dianna Hunter, Rosemary's colleague and former director of Women's Studies at UW Superior; members of the Minnesota Threshold Network, and others who attended the reading.
Book Launch in the Dominican Republic
The second book launch of the new Spinsters Ink edition ofLesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence was held at Club Med, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, sponsored by the Olivia, a travel company for lesbians. Nancy and Becky discussed lesbian literature, including Becky’s two mystery novels and Nancy’s two nonfiction publications. Forty women, including two former nuns, attended the event held in an open-air tropical palapa.
One of the women said, “When I first came out, I was told to read two things that would help me find myself: Rubyfruit Jungle andLesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence. Those books have been part of my life for almost 30 years!”
